Type 2 Diabetes & The Coronavirus

The CDC reported that diabetics in China experienced 7-8 times more death when infected with COVID-19. Why?

In February 2020, the Center or Disease Control and Prevention reported, based on Chinese experience, that among people who got infection from coronavirus, those who had diabetes experienced 7-8 times more death compared to those who do not have any underlying medical condition.

Diabetes experts claim this is because of the impaired immunity. I believe that this finding is because of increased viral multiplication by the infected cells. Cells draw in energy from the glucose and insulin being a promoter of selectivity.

Viruses that get down into your lungs damage cells in the lining. And these cells can now harbor bacteria. In the presence of increased glucose in the environment, these bacteria multiply and could produce complications such as pneumonia.

The body tries to remove the bacteria, repair the damage by sending cells and materials to the site. However, people with long standing Type 2 diabetes may have blocked or partially blocked arteries because of fat deposition. Where did that fat come from?

Let me explain this way: When you take insulin, or the medication that causes the release of insulin in your body, insulin reduces blood glucose not by sending it out of the body but by converting that into fat. This fat can get deposited in the lining of the blood vessels impeding your blood flow.

People with Type 2 diabetes often suffer from kidney or heart or other complications. On top of that when you add pneumonia and lung function problems, then that can become very serious and could explain the increased rate of deaths.

So what can be done?

1. Of course you have to practice social isolation or separation as explained and avoidance of groups. I also suggest that every Type 2 diabetic person when going outside wear a pair of thin cotton gloves and when you come back home, wash the gloves and hands thoroughly.

2. In order to reduce your blood glucose and insulin level in the body, reduce the intake of all grains and grain-flour products to less that a third of your total daily energy intake.

3. Drink something hot every few hours so that the normal temperature in your mouth will be increased and slow down the viral multiplication, so your immune system can take care of it.

4. In order to boost your immune system, you need a number of essential nutrients and you can not get those from any single food or nutrient supplement. So eat a variety of food such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, seafood, and meat if you like, eggs, also supplement that with mushrooms, spices and herbs. That is the best way to not only boost your immune system but for healthy functioning of other systems in the body.
