In 2016 the American Psychological Association reviewed a pattern of salt intake and reported a staggering 90% of Americans consume too much salt. People are getting more dependent on salt and craving salty foods.

What is wrong with that?

Yes, the body needs salt for nerves, heart and metabolic function as well as for fluid balance. But the amount of salt needed on a daily basis is only 150-500 mg. The average American consumes 3.4 grams. 6-7 times the normal!

Watch this short video to learn why this is a problem.

What can you do to check on your salt intake?

  • Processed food has a higher amount of salt so prepare as many meals as you can at home.
  • Remember, the amount of salt in 1 slice of bread is already 200 mg of sodium and the suggested amount is again 150-500 mg.
  • Test to see if you are retaining salt in the body. Prepare all your foods at home with no salt for two days. If you lost weight, lowered your blood pressure or your ankle swelling goes down, you are retaining sodium and you should lower your salt intake.

The salt you consume today may not be so enjoyable later.
