BMI is a great tool for comparing group studies but it is not a good tool for individuals because it does not show where the fat is located inside the body.

In 2017, the Annals of Internal Medicine published an article showing the highest body mass is better correlated with mortality than random bmi or body mass. Insurance companies assess weight related problems by compiling your weight with the average weight of a group of people, same sex, same height, same age, same population. However that fails to take into account for the amount of fat in the body. To correct that BMI was formulated.
