This week, I’m sharing an article that I call for urgent action to address the nation’s health crisis through Congressional hearings focused on improving public health. The article highlights the pressing need for legislative reform and offers suggestions for how the government can take a more active role in promoting health and wellness across the country. It was originally posted in USADailyStandard.
As a retired MD, I have been studying weight gain, obesity, and Type 2 diabetes for more than 30 years. I have read hundreds of articles in the medical literature on these topics and have developed a set of insights into obesity and Type 2 diabetes that can explain the cause and prevention of these conditions in a way that can save taxpayers billions of dollars while improving the health and lifespan of millions of Americans.
The leading cause of obesity and Type 2 diabetes is the modern American diet.
There is no other common factor that causes the epidemic of obesity and Type 2 diabetes other than a diet in which most Americans consume more than 50% of their daily caloric intake through carbohydrates, predominantly grains and grain-flour products. The added sugar in sodas and juices may contribute to these lifestyle conditions. Still, the leading culprit is the voluminous amounts of glucose Americans ingest from grains and grain flour products. I’m referring to the steady diet of breads, muffins, fast food sandwiches, desserts, tacos, pizza, and so on.

As you know, $1 in every $4 in health care costs is spent on treating diabetes and its complications. Despite the US government spending over $250 billion each year for insulin and other Type 2 diabetes drugs and diabetic care, are you aware that 60% of Type 2 diabetes patients suffer nerve damage, 50% suffer kidney damage, 25% suffer eye damage, and 2.5% undergo amputations? The fact is that endocrinologists can’t tell us the real cause of Type 2 diabetes.
Yet, medical doctors and the drug industry constantly promote the theory of insulin resistance and treat Type 2 diabetes with insulin. This is illogical.
Type 1 diabetes results from the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin, and therefore, insulin is required for survival. Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle condition resulting from overconsumption of complex carbohydrates that requires treatment via lifestyle changes, particularly diet, as I said above, as well as exercise.
We should challenge drug companies to explain why their drugs are ineffective in producing meaningful reductions of complications of Type 2 diabetes despite controlling blood sugar.

To break the extreme waste of taxpayer funds spent on diabetes, I propose that you initiate hearings similar to what Senator George McGovern did decades ago when he ran hearings on fat in the American diet. Your hearings would require pharmaceutical companies, medical providers, and gadget makers (such as blood sugar meters) to explain how they justify their prices and profits when their claims of insulin resistance to explain Type 2 diabetes have never been proven, despite 80 years of research. We know more about HIV after just 20 years than we know about Type 2 diabetes despite billions of dollars spent on research since the notion of insulin resistance was erroneously proposed.
I believe these hearings will expose the fact that the concept of insulin resistance as the causative factor of Type 2 diabetes has never been scientifically validated. This will put you in a strong position to formulate legislation not only for more cost-effective care of Type 2 diabetes, which is a significant drain on Medicare, Medicaid, and private health management systems, but also to begin investigating many other lifestyle conditions on which the US government wastes money when they rightly should be treated through consumer education, and not costly drugs.
Additionally, I was a guest on EZ Conversations podcast. We discussed insights into how our dietary choices and stress response play a significant role in chronic diseases. The dialogue shed light on several pressing health issues and explored potential solutions that challenge conventional medical wisdom.
EZ Conversations hosted by Furkhan Dandia, a groundbreaking podcast that dives deep into mental health, societal issues, and the incredible human ability to overcome adversity.
